Buyer's Guide · September 2026
Best Talent Management Software
How Sageo's talent management compares with Lattice, PerformYard, Engagedly, Deel, BambooHR, ClearCompany, Rippling, Paylocity, Greenhouse, Eightfold AI, Cornerstone, Darwinbox, Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, and UKG Pro.
The verdict
- Best for culture-first talent architecture
- Sageo, frameworks, calibration, development plans and proper designation ladders, generated from your values.
- Best enterprise talent suite
- An enterprise HCM (Workday or SAP class), for large, integrated core-HR, payroll and talent in one system of record.
- Best mid-market talent suite
- Leapsome, performance, learning, engagement and compensation for growing companies.
Bottom line. Choose Sageo for the strategic talent layer, competency architecture and calibrated development, without an enterprise rollout. Choose an enterprise HCM for full system-of-record scale, or Leapsome for a mid-market suite.

For founders, CEOs, and people leaders at companies of 10 to 1,000 employees who want a clear system for how people grow, move, and get promoted.
This guide compares talent management only
We compare each product on one thing: its talent management capability. That means career architecture and skills, hiring and onboarding hand-offs, development and learning, internal mobility, succession, and talent intelligence. We do not score payroll, benefits, or HRIS administration. Reviews, 360s, and goals appear only as inputs to talent decisions. For narrower buys, see our companion guides on performance management, performance review, 360 feedback, and OKR software at sageo.ai/guides.
A note on who wrote this
Sageo publishes this guide. We make one of the sixteen products in it, and it covers only part of the talent lifecycle. Several products here do far more, and we say so. Every competitor figure comes from vendor materials, pricing pages, buyer-reported pricing data, and review sites, as of September 2026. Every Sageo claim comes from sageo.ai. Section 7 covers when you should not choose Sageo.
1. Which talent management software should you choose?
"Talent management" is sold as one category. It is really a lifecycle: hire, assess, develop, move, and succeed. Enterprise suites cover all of it. Most scaling companies need a smaller, sharper piece first.
That piece is career architecture: written levels, tracks, and competencies that say what good looks like at each step. Without it, reviews are opinions, development plans are guesses, and promotions are politics. Every skills cloud and talent marketplace in this guide sits on top of that foundation or quietly assumes you already have it.
Sageo builds that foundation from your values in an afternoon, scores people against it, and turns the result into development plans and goals. It does not do recruiting, learning content, succession grids, or internal talent marketplaces. If you need those, this guide names the right tools.
Quick picks
| If this is you | Shortlist | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 10 to 1,000 people with no written levels or career tracks | Sageo | AI-generated level ladders per function, IC and manager tracks, scored reviews, and development plans. €6 per seat. |
| Mid-market, want reviews, career tracks, and 9-box in one tool | Lattice, Engagedly, PerformYard | Performance-led suites with talent add-ons. |
| Hiring is the bottleneck and you want hire-to-review data | ClearCompany, Greenhouse | Source-of-hire linked to performance (ClearCompany); structured hiring (Greenhouse). |
| You want talent inside your HRIS and payroll | Rippling, Paylocity, BambooHR | One employee record. Talent depth is lighter. |
| Global, distributed team already on Deel | Deel Engage | AI career frameworks, LMS, and reviews in one $20 bundle. |
| Learning and compliance at enterprise scale | Cornerstone | 50,000+ skills graph, deep LMS, talent marketplace. |
| 5,000+ employees, skills-based internal mobility | Eightfold AI, Workday | Skills inference, career hubs, and marketplaces. |
| Enterprise HCM in Asia, Europe, or North America | Darwinbox, SAP SuccessFactors, UKG Pro, Workday | Full talent suites on a single HCM record. |
2. What is talent management software?
Talent management software, sometimes called a talent management platform, a talent management system, or simply talent management tools, is the layer that connects how you hire, assess, develop, move, and retain people. It overlaps with two adjacent categories you may also be weighing: performance management software, which starts from reviews and goals, and 360 feedback software, which starts from multi-rater assessment. The best fit depends on where your gaps are.
We assessed every product against the same seven capabilities across the talent lifecycle.
| # | Capability | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Career architecture and skills | Written levels, tracks, and competencies per function. A skills view that stays current. |
| 2 | Acquire and onboard | Hiring data, such as competencies assessed at interview, carried into the employee record. |
| 3 | Assess | Reviews and calibration against the same architecture, so ratings mean the same thing across teams. |
| 4 | Develop | Development plans built from real gaps, with actions, resources, and learning. |
| 5 | Move | Career paths people can see, and internal roles, projects, or mentors matched to their skills. |
| 6 | Succeed | Talent reviews, 9-box, succession slates, and readiness for critical roles. |
| 7 | Talent intelligence | Flight risk, skills gaps, and bench strength, with AI that helps rather than guesses. |
Five kinds of talent management software
| Category | Products | What talent management looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Performance-led talent suites | Sageo, Lattice, PerformYard, Engagedly, Deel Engage | Start from reviews and frameworks; add careers, development, and 9-box. |
| Lifecycle talent suites | ClearCompany, Cornerstone | Hire to learn to succeed, on top of an external HRIS. |
| HRIS with talent modules | BambooHR, Rippling, Paylocity | Talent next to payroll and records. Convenient, lighter depth. |
| Enterprise HCM | Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, UKG Pro, Darwinbox | Full talent suites for large, complex organisations. |
| Specialists | Eightfold AI, Greenhouse | Talent intelligence (Eightfold) or structured hiring (Greenhouse). |
3. What seven questions decide your shortlist?
Ask every vendor these before you book a demo.
1. Do we have career architecture yet?
If you cannot say what a level 3 engineer is expected to do, start there. Sageo generates level ladders per function with separate IC and manager tracks. Deel Engage builds competency models and career paths with AI. Lattice and PerformYard give you matrices to fill in. Enterprise suites expect a job architecture before implementation.
2. Skills taxonomy or competency framework?
Skills clouds (Eightfold's 1.6 million skills, Cornerstone's 50,000+, Workday Skills Cloud, SAP's Attributes Library) infer skills from data and shine at 5,000+ people. Competency frameworks define expected behaviour per level and work at any size. Most scaling companies need the second first.
3. Does hiring data flow into talent data?
ClearCompany carries competencies assessed in recruiting into onboarding, learning, and the 9-box. Rippling, Paylocity, and BambooHR convert candidates into employee records automatically. Sageo has no ATS; people arrive by CSV import.
4. Where does development actually happen?
Some tools write plans; others deliver learning. Cornerstone, Paylocity, Rippling, Engagedly, Deel, Darwinbox, and UKG Pro have native learning. Sageo drafts development plans from real assessment gaps, with actions, resources, and timeframes, approved by a manager, but has no content library.
5. Can people see where they could go next?
Visible career paths are the single biggest retention lever for scaling teams. Talent marketplaces with gigs and mentors (Eightfold, Cornerstone, Workday, SAP, UKG, Darwinbox) matter once you have enough internal roles to fill.
6. How is succession handled?
Lattice, Engagedly, PerformYard, ClearCompany, Paylocity, and the enterprise suites include 9-box and succession views. Sageo does not describe succession planning; it gives each person a record with framework, level, track, performance history, plans, and goals.
7. What will it cost to implement, not just license?
Implementation ranges from nothing (Sageo, PerformYard) to 1x to 3x the first-year licence (Workday, SAP SuccessFactors). Ask for the full year-one number.
4. How much does talent management software cost?
Year-one cost for the modules that cover career architecture, assessment, development, and (where offered) mobility and succession. Annual list or reported prices, plus implementation where known. Sageo is priced in euros; dollar equivalents at roughly €1 = $1.17.
How to read this table
Prices are not like for like. HRIS and HCM rows include payroll and core HR. Enterprise rows include learning, mobility, and succession that Sageo does not offer.
The useful question is what you need in the next two years. For most companies under 500 people, that is career architecture, fair assessment, and development plans.
| Product | What you need to buy | Year one, 50 people | Year one, 200 people | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sageo | Platform, €6, every module | €3,600 (~$4,200) | €14,400 (~$16,800) | No implementation fee. |
| PerformYard | Talent Development $5 to $15 (plus Performance) | $3,000 to $9,000 | $12,000 to $36,000 | No LMS. $0 implementation. |
| Lattice | Performance $10 + Grow $4 | $8,400 | $33,600 | $4,000 minimum. |
| Engagedly | Performance, Learning, Mobility, $10 to $15 | $7,500 minimum | $24,000 to $36,000 | $7,500 minimum. |
| Deel Engage | Full bundle, $20 | $12,000 | $48,000 | No single-module purchase. |
| BambooHR | Pro ~$17 incl. HRIS (est.) | ~$10,200 | ~$40,800 | Talent fit ends ~150 people. |
| Paylocity | Full HCM + talent, $22 to $33 (est.) | $13,200 to $19,800 | $52,800 to $79,200 | Includes payroll. 10% to 20% implementation. |
| Rippling | Unity + talent apps (est.) | $13,200 to $26,220 | Quote; ~$219k at 250 full suite | Implementation $1,500 to $20,000. |
| ClearCompany | Talent suite, $7 to $10 (est.) | Poor fit under 50 | $20,000 to $40,000 | Services 15% to 25% of year one. |
| Greenhouse | Recruiting + Onboarding, quote | Quote | Quote | Hiring only. |
| Darwinbox | Full HCM + talent, ~$8.50 | Not a fit | ~$20,400 + $5k to $15k | Built for 500+. |
| Cornerstone | Learning-led suite, $6 to $10 | Not a fit | Not a fit | LMS floor ~$65k to $70k. |
| UKG Pro | Full suite, $34 to $41 at 500+ | Not a fit | Not a fit | Implementation floor $50k+. |
| SAP SuccessFactors | Full suite, $15 to $38 | Not a fit | Not a fit | $180k+ at 1,000 people. |

5. How do the talent management tools compare?
"Not stated" means we could not find it in the vendor's public materials. It may exist. Ask in the demo.

6. How does each talent management tool compare, in depth?
Reminder: talent management only
We compare each product on one thing: its talent management capability, career architecture and skills, hiring and onboarding hand-offs, development and learning, internal mobility, succession, and talent intelligence. We do not score payroll, benefits, or HRIS administration. Reviews, 360s, and goals appear only as inputs to talent decisions.
Each profile covers the talent management capability on its own terms, then compares it to Sageo at the end. We start with a Sageo profile in the same format so you have a baseline.

7. When is Sageo not the right talent management tool?
Sageo covers career architecture, assessment, and development. It is not a full talent suite.
- You need recruiting or onboarding. Greenhouse, ClearCompany, Rippling, Paylocity, or BambooHR.
- You need a learning library or LMS. Cornerstone, Engagedly, Deel Engage, Paylocity, or Rippling.
- You need succession planning and 9-box today. Lattice, PerformYard, Engagedly, ClearCompany, or an enterprise suite.
- You need an internal talent marketplace. Eightfold, Cornerstone, Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, UKG Pro, or Darwinbox.
- You need skills inference across thousands of people. Eightfold, Workday, or Cornerstone.
- You want talent inside your payroll system. Rippling, Paylocity, or BambooHR.
Where Sageo is the right talent management tool
- You have no written levels, tracks, or competencies yet.
- You want your values built into every career framework.
- You want promotions and development to follow the same written criteria as reviews.
- You want plans that get finished, tracked through 1:1s and the next cycle.
- You want all of it live this month at €6 per seat, alongside your existing HRIS and ATS.
8. What should you ask in a talent-software demo?
Ask every vendor these questions and write the answers down.
- Show me the level ladder for a product manager. Who wrote it, and how long did it take?
- Do you use competency frameworks, a skills taxonomy, or both?
- How does hiring data reach the employee record?
- Where do development plans come from, and who approves them?
- Can employees see career paths and open internal roles?
- How are successors identified and readiness tracked?
- What AI is used, and what employee data does it see?
- What must we buy for career architecture, development, and succession?
- What is the full year-one cost including implementation?
- How long until managers are using it?
9. How was this guide researched?
We compiled this guide in September 2026 from vendor materials, pricing pages, buyer-reported pricing data, and review aggregates on G2, Capterra and TrustRadius. We assessed each product only on its talent management capability, against the seven capabilities in section 2.
We do not score payroll, benefits, or HRIS administration. Reviews, 360s, and goals appear only as inputs to talent decisions. For narrower buys, see our companion guides on performance management, performance review, 360 feedback, and OKR software at sageo.ai/guides.
"Not stated" means the capability was not in public materials. Estimates are marked. If you spot an error, tell us. Sageo information comes from sageo.ai. All product names are trademarks of their owners. This guide is not endorsed by any of them.

What is the best talent management software?
For the strategic layer, mapping competencies, calibrating performance and building development plans, Sageo fits best because it generates the framework from your values and runs the full cycle for EUR 6 per seat. Enterprise HCMs and Leapsome suit full-suite or mid-market needs.
What does talent management software include?
Typically competency frameworks, performance reviews, calibration, succession, development plans, goals and sometimes learning and compensation. Sageo covers frameworks, 360 reviews, calibration, development plans, goals and 1:1s in one all-in price.
Which talent tools generate competency frameworks automatically?
Sageo is the only platform in this guide that generates level-by-level, function-specific competency frameworks from your company values. Other suites provide a template library or expect you to build the model yourself.
Is talent management software suitable for European, privacy-conscious companies?
It should be. Sageo is built for the EU: names are stripped before any AI call, humans approve every AI output, and an immutable audit trail supports GDPR, the EU AI Act and pay-transparency requirements.
