# The Best Workday Alternatives for 2026

_Fifteen honest Workday alternatives, sorted by buyer rather than ranked one to fifteen: Oracle and SAP for true enterprise swaps; Dayforce, UKG and ADP for payroll and workforce management; Rippling, HiBob and Darwinbox when Workday is overkill; BambooHR, Zoho, Paylocity and Employment Hero for SMBs; and the specialists (Cornerstone, Justworks, Microsoft, Sageo) that replace one slice and sit alongside a system of record._

By The Sageo Team. Updated October 2026. 22 min read.

Workday is the enterprise standard: a full HCM and finance suite on a single data model, with more than 11,000 customers and deep penetration of the Fortune 500. It is a genuinely strong product, rated 4.1 on G2 across roughly 1,690 reviews. So most teams do not leave because Workday is bad. They leave because it is expensive (roughly $35 to $45 per employee per month for HCM alone, $100-plus with payroll and finance), slow to implement (6 to 18 months), heavy to administer, or simply overkill for their size.

> **A note on who wrote this**
>
> Sageo publishes this comparison, and Sageo is one of the sixteen products in it, though not a Workday replacement (more on that in section 8). So we held ourselves to three rules. Every Workday and competitor figure comes from vendor documentation, G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, Gartner Peer Insights and procurement aggregators, as of October 2026. Every Sageo claim comes from sageo.ai. And where another product is the better fit, we say so plainly. The honest headline: there is no single Workday alternative, so this page sorts by buyer, not by rank.

## 1. Which Workday alternative should you choose?

"Workday" means different things to different buyers, so the right alternative depends on what pushed you off it: the cost, the size mismatch, the region, or a single capability you need more of. Match the reason to the shortlist.

**Quick picks**

| If you are leaving Workday because... | Look at | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| You run a 1,000-plus person global enterprise and need a true full-suite replacement | Oracle Cloud HCM, SAP SuccessFactors | The only real like-for-like swaps. Both match Workday across the HCM suite. Oracle competes on ERP adjacency and bundled AI agents, SAP on global payroll reach. Neither is dramatically cheaper or simpler. |
| Your workforce is hourly or frontline and payroll, time and scheduling matter most | Dayforce, UKG Pro, ADP | Deeper native payroll and workforce management than Workday, usually at lower PEPM. Dayforce for continuous real-time pay, UKG for Kronos-grade scheduling, ADP for managed payroll and PEO. |
| Workday is overkill for your size and you want fast setup and a modern UI | Rippling, HiBob, Darwinbox | Modern mid-market HCM, deployed in weeks not months, at far lower TCO. Rippling adds IT and Finance on one record, HiBob suits multinational tech, Darwinbox is the credible enterprise challenger in APAC and MEA. |
| You are an SMB that never needed an enterprise suite | BambooHR, Zoho People, Paylocity, Employment Hero | Published pricing and simple core HR. BambooHR (US, loved, 50 to 500), Zoho People (cheapest, India and global south), Paylocity (US payroll-first), Employment Hero (ANZ, UK and SEA). |
| You only need to replace one slice of Workday | Cornerstone, Justworks, Microsoft Dynamics 365 HR | Specialists that sit alongside a system of record. Cornerstone for learning and talent, Justworks for US payroll and benefits via a PEO, Microsoft for core HR on the Dynamics ERP. |
| You are keeping your HRIS but want performance and development done properly | Sageo | A culture-first performance layer that runs on top of any system of record, including Workday itself. Generates competency frameworks from your values, then runs 360s, calibration, 1:1s and development plans. About €6 per seat, every module included. |

## 2. Why do teams leave Workday?

Five reasons come up again and again. None of them mean Workday is a poor product. They mean it is built and priced for large, complex, global employers, and if that is not you, the fit gets expensive or heavy.

- **Cost and total cost of ownership:** Roughly $35 to $45 PEPM for HCM alone at scale, rising past $100 PEPM with Financials, Payroll or Planning. Six- and seven-figure annual contracts are normal, and implementation often costs 100 to 150 percent of the first-year subscription. This is the single biggest lever every alternative plays.
- **Implementation time:** Deployments commonly run 6 to 18 months and effectively require a certified systems integrator. SMB and mid-market tools go live in days to weeks (Rippling about a month, several SMB tools faster). This is the most quotable gap in the category.
- **Admin complexity:** Workday needs trained administrators or consultants, with a steep learning curve and click-heavy navigation. Simpler tools win on self-serve configuration.
- **Size mismatch:** Workday is overkill below roughly 500 to 1,000 employees. Many companies bought it to look enterprise-ready and now pay enterprise cost for capability they do not use.
- **Reporting rigidity:** Reporting inflexibility at the edges is a recurring complaint even from satisfied customers. It is one reason Workday sits at 4.1 on G2 while simpler, cheaper tools out-rate it (Rippling 4.7 to 4.8, BambooHR 4.4 to 4.6, HiBob 4.5).

## 3. There is no single Workday alternative

This is the most important thing to understand before you shortlist. For a global 5,000-person enterprise, only a handful of suites are real swaps. For a 300-person company that bought Workday as overkill, the honest alternatives are modern mid-market tools. And several names on most "alternatives" lists are not full-suite alternatives at all: they replace one slice of Workday and sit alongside a system of record. The fifteen tools here fall into five groups.

- **1. True enterprise peers (full-suite swaps):** Oracle Cloud HCM and SAP SuccessFactors. They match Workday across the whole HCM suite for large, global employers. Neither is meaningfully cheaper or simpler.
- **2. Payroll and workforce-management counter-picks:** Dayforce, UKG Pro and ADP. Choose these when real-time payroll, time, attendance, scheduling and compliance for hourly or frontline workforces matter more than Workday's talent, skills and planning depth.
- **3. Modern mid-market (the Workday-is-overkill escape):** Rippling, HiBob and Darwinbox. Fast setup, strong usability, far lower TCO. Rippling unifies HR, IT and Finance; HiBob wins on employee experience for multinational tech; Darwinbox leads in APAC, MEA and India.
- **4. SMB all-in-one:** BambooHR, Zoho People, Paylocity and Employment Hero. They do not try to match Workday capability; they win on price, speed and fit for companies that never needed an enterprise suite.
- **5. Specialists (one slice, alongside a system of record):** Cornerstone (learning and talent), Justworks (US payroll and benefits via a PEO), Microsoft Dynamics 365 HR (core HR on the ERP) and Sageo (performance and development). None is a full Workday replacement, and each says so.

## 4. How the alternatives compare

**Workday and fifteen alternatives, 2026**

| Tool | What it really is | Best-fit size / region | Price | G2 (reviews) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Workday | Full HCM + finance suite (baseline) | 1,000+, global | $35 to $45+ PEPM HCM; $100+ with payroll (est) | 4.1 (1,691) |
| Oracle Cloud HCM | Full HCM suite, closest true peer | Large enterprise | Quote; ~$276K/yr at 1,000 FTE full suite (est) | 3.8 (89) |
| SAP SuccessFactors | Full HXM suite | 1,000+, global, SAP shops | Quote; ~$28 to $38 PEPM full suite (est) | 4.2 (16,359) |
| Dayforce | Single-engine payroll + WFM HCM | Mid to enterprise, hourly | Quote; ~$22 to $31 PEPM (est) | 4.2 (962) |
| UKG Pro | HCM + deep workforce management | Mid to enterprise, frontline | Quote; ~$27 to $41 PEPM (est) | 4.3 (2,256) |
| ADP Workforce Now | Payroll-led HCM + PEO | SMB to enterprise, payroll-first | Quote; RUN and Roll published, rest est | 4.2 (4,477) |
| Rippling | HR + IT + Finance on one record | SMB to mid-market, moving up | Quote; ~$23 to $38 PEPM stacked (est) | 4.7 (13,242) |
| HiBob (Bob) | Modern mid-market HRIS | 100 to 2,000, multinational tech | Quote; ~$16 to $25 PEPM (est) | 4.5 (2,711) |
| Darwinbox | Enterprise HCM challenger | Enterprise, APAC / MEA / India | Quote; ~$8 to $10 PEPM (est) | 4.4 (215) |
| BambooHR | Loved SMB core HR | SMB, 50 to 500 sweet spot | Core $10 / Pro $17 / Elite $25 PEPM, published | 4.4 (8,293) |
| Zoho People | SMB all-in-one in a huge ecosystem | SMB, India / MEA / global south | ~$1.50 to $5 /emp/mo, published; free to 5 | 4.5 (431) |
| Paylocity | US payroll + HR + employee experience | US SMB to mid (<5,000) | Quote; ~$22 to $33 PEPM (est) | 4.4 (6,320) |
| Employment Hero | SMB all-in-one HR + payroll | SMB, AU / NZ / UK / SEA | From A$10/user/mo HR; A$8 payroll, published | 4.4 (Capterra 239) |
| Cornerstone | Talent + learning specialist, not an HRIS | Enterprise L&D | Quote; ~$6 to $10 PEPM (est) | 4.1 (530) |
| Microsoft D365 HR | Core-HR module in the ERP + Viva | Microsoft-stack enterprises | $135/user/mo list + $4 self-service add-on | n/a (tiny sample) |
| Justworks | US PEO for small business, not a suite | US SMB (<100) | PEO ~$59 Basic / ~$99 to $109 Plus /emp/mo, published | 4.6 (1,127) |
| Sageo | Performance and development layer | 10 to 1,000, runs on top of any HRIS | About €6 per seat, all modules, published | n/a |

_Workday is the baseline (first row). Ratings are G2 with review counts in brackets, checked October 2026, and are platform-wide. Capterra and GetApp share one data pool. All Workday-class pricing is estimated, because Workday, Oracle, SAP, UKG, Dayforce, ADP and Paylocity publish no list price; figures marked (est) are third-party estimates, not list prices. Sageo is listed last: it is a performance layer that runs alongside a system of record, not a Workday replacement, so it has no suite breadth or G2 volume of its own here._

## 5. What the alternatives cost

Pricing transparency is the single clearest contrast an alternative can draw against Workday, and it splits the field cleanly.

- **The enterprise tier is quote-only:** Workday, Oracle, SAP, UKG, Dayforce, ADP (beyond RUN and Roll) and Paylocity all sell on negotiated quotes with no public list price. Expect six- and seven-figure annual contracts at enterprise scale, plus implementation that commonly runs 100 to 150 percent of the first-year subscription for Workday-class suites.
- **The transparent-pricing alternatives:** BambooHR (Core $10, Pro $17, Elite $25 PEPM), Zoho People (about $1.50 to $5 per employee, free to 5), Employment Hero (from about A$10 per user), Justworks (PEO about $59 to $109 per employee) and Sageo (about €6 per seat, every module) all publish prices. For an SMB, that alone removes weeks of sales friction.
- **Implementation is the other weapon:** Workday is 6 to 18 months with a required integrator. Rippling reports about a month, most SMB tools faster, and Sageo about an hour to set up. If time-to-value matters, the gap is enormous.
- **Watch the per-employee stacking:** Several alternatives (Rippling, ADP, BambooHR, HiBob) price a base plus paid add-on modules, and bill on total headcount, not active users. A low headline PEPM can double once payroll, benefits and time are added, so always get a fully loaded, all-modules quote.

## 6. Each alternative in depth

Grouped by the five buckets above. Each profile covers what the tool is, where it beats Workday, where it falls short, price, and the verdict. Sageo comes last, as the specialist that is not a replacement at all.

**Group 1: True enterprise peers (full-suite swaps)**

### Oracle Cloud HCM

Oracle Fusion Cloud HCM is the closest true like-for-like rival to Workday HCM at the large-enterprise end, sold inside the broader Oracle Fusion stack. It competes on suite breadth, OCI economics and ERP adjacency rather than being lighter or cheaper, and has been a Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader for Cloud HCM for eleven consecutive years.

**Where it beats Workday**

- Lower apparent entry PEPM (around $15 base, estimated) and strong discounting leverage for companies already on Oracle ERP.
- The broadest shipping prebuilt AI agent catalog: 16-plus HCM agents plus an AI Agent Studio and Marketplace, bundled at no extra cost on OCI.
- One unified data model across HCM, ERP, SCM and CX, and a slight edge on ease of admin (G2 8.0 versus 7.8).

**Watch out for**

- A steep reporting and analytics learning curve, dated navigation, slow performance on large data, and inconsistent support (G2 7.1 versus Workday's 8.2).
- Narrow native payroll localization (13 countries reported) with partners beyond, and many 2025 flagship agents still carrying a future-product disclaimer. A 1,000-FTE minimum and roughly 10-month implementation rule out smaller buyers.

**Pricing**

Quote-based PEPM with a 1,000-FTE minimum. Third-party estimates put the full suite near $276,000 a year at 1,000 FTEs at list (about $235,000 with a 15 percent discount), before implementation of roughly 10 to 20 percent of annual software.

**What users say**

Rated 3.8 on G2 (89 reviews) and 4.0 on Capterra (93), but 4.8 on Gartner Peer Insights (around 400). Public (NYSE: ORCL), co-CEOs since September 2025.

**Verdict:** the enterprise peer to shortlist if you already run Oracle ERP and want suite breadth plus bundled AI agents. Not cheaper or simpler than Workday in any meaningful way.

### SAP SuccessFactors

SAP SuccessFactors is the enterprise HXM suite and the primary SAP-ecosystem alternative to Workday, strongest in SAP and S/4HANA shops and in global payroll. It is priced below Workday in most deals and carries the largest review base in this set.

**Where it beats Workday**

- Cheaper: a full suite around $28 to $38 PEPM versus Workday's $25 to $45, and 10 to 25 percent cheaper at scale in third-party scenarios.
- A global payroll edge, with native payroll engines spanning 45-plus countries.
- Native S/4HANA integration, long-standing LMS depth, and deep country localization.

**Watch out for**

- A dated, click-heavy, inconsistent module-to-module UX, and weak native reporting that leans on People Intelligence in Business Data Cloud.
- Heavy, partner-led implementation with partner fees of 100 to 125 percent of the annual license, and friction integrating non-SAP systems. Overkill below roughly 1,000 employees.

**Pricing**

Module-based, quote-driven PEPM. Estimated full suite around $28 to $38 PEPM; for 1,000 employees roughly $456,000 a year, with first-year TCO from $400,000 to over $1M and SAP support near 22 percent of the annual license.

**What users say**

Rated 4.2 on G2 (16,359 reviews, the largest base here) and 4.0 on Capterra (295). A Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader for Cloud HCM in 2024 and 2025. Owned by SAP SE since 2012.

**Verdict:** the enterprise swap for SAP shops and global-payroll-heavy employers, cheaper than Workday but with a dated UX and a partner-led rollout.

**Group 2: Payroll and workforce-management counter-picks**

### Dayforce

Dayforce (formerly Ceridian) is a full-suite cloud HCM built on a single payroll-and-time engine that calculates pay continuously in real time. It is the payroll and workforce-management counter-pick to Workday for hourly, shift-based, compliance-heavy workforces.

**Where it beats Workday**

- One engine that calculates pay continuously in real time, an architectural claim Workday cannot match head-on.
- Native, mature workforce management: time, attendance, scheduling, labor forecasting and absence.
- Dayforce Wallet on-demand pay included natively, plus often lower TCO and a faster go-live (around 7-month average implementation per G2).

**Watch out for**

- Talent, skills, learning, compensation and workforce planning are shallower than Workday, with no Adaptive Planning analog.
- Global native payroll is narrower than the 200-plus country headline (it leans on acquired engines and partners), plus slow support and complex report building.

**Pricing**

Quote-based PEPM, estimated around $22 to $31 PEPM, with implementation roughly 40 to 60 percent of annual software fees.

**What users say**

Rated 4.2 on G2 (962 reviews) and 4.3 on Capterra (1,063). Public (NYSE: DAY), with a pending $12.3B take-private by Thoma Bravo signed August 2025 (verify close status).

**Verdict:** the strongest pick when real-time payroll and workforce management for an hourly workforce outweigh Workday's talent and planning depth.

### UKG Pro

UKG Pro is an enterprise HCM suite that leads on payroll and workforce management thanks to its Kronos heritage. It is the credible challenger for frontline-heavy, hourly, payroll-intensive enterprises, while trailing Workday on global reach, talent depth and unified architecture.

**Where it beats Workday**

- Kronos-derived time, attendance and AI scheduling that beat Workday, with a Leader placement in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for workforce management.
- Three decades of Great Place To Work culture benchmarks feeding Bryte AI, a data asset Workday cannot match.
- Lower headline PEPM (around $27 to $41 full suite) and strong native US and Canada payroll for hourly workforces.

**Watch out for**

- Two-platform friction: UKG Pro and UKG Pro WFM can feel like separate systems with separate logins, plus rigid, slow reporting.
- A dated performance module, thinner skills and comp, no native financials or planning, and inconsistent support.

**Pricing**

Quote-based PEPM, estimated $27 to $41 for the full HCM-plus-WFM suite, with implementation partner fees of $50,000 to $500,000-plus. Vendr-disclosed median annual spend near $13,600 across a wide range.

**What users say**

Rated 4.3 on G2 (around 2,256 reviews) and 4.3 on Capterra (733). Private, controlled by Hellman & Friedman. Cut about 950 roles (6 percent) in April 2026 citing AI.

**Verdict:** the pick when workforce management and payroll for a large hourly workforce are the center of gravity, with the two-platform seams weighed honestly.

### ADP Workforce Now

ADP is a payroll-and-compliance-first HCM incumbent that out-scales Workday on managed payroll, tax and PEO, while trailing on unified talent, skills and analytics depth. Its ladder runs from RUN (SMB) through Workforce Now (mid-market) to Vantage and Lyric HCM (enterprise).

**Where it beats Workday**

- A payroll and tax-compliance moat with a broader managed global payroll footprint (140-plus countries) than Workday.
- PEO and outsourced HR (TotalSource, Comprehensive Services) that Workday does not offer.
- Purpose-built SMB products (RUN, Roll) where Workday is overkill, plus a 42-million-wage-earner data moat behind ADP Assist.

**Watch out for**

- Thinner talent, no Skills Cloud equivalent, shallower learning and planning, and reporting called multi-step and non-intuitive.
- A dated UX on legacy products and a fragmented product ladder (RUN, Workforce Now, Vantage, Enterprise HR, GlobalView, Lyric) with opaque pricing.

**Pricing**

Quote-based and opaque; only RUN and Roll publish (Roll $39 a month plus $5 per worker). Workforce Now for about 200 employees is estimated near $55,000 to $72,000 a year in base software, with PEO around 2 to 12 percent of payroll.

**What users say**

Workforce Now rated 4.2 on G2 (4,477 reviews) and 4.4 on Capterra (7,287). Public (NASDAQ: ADP); the strategic pivot is Lyric HCM, an AI-native graph-based platform.

**Verdict:** the choice when payroll accuracy, tax compliance and outsourced HR are the priority, across a wide SMB-to-enterprise ladder.

**Group 3: Modern mid-market (the Workday-is-overkill escape)**

### Rippling

Rippling is a unified HR, IT and Finance platform built on one employee system of record, moving upmarket to challenge Workday. Its real edge is unification, not HR depth, and it has the strongest review scores in this set.

**Where it beats Workday**

- The only major player running HR, IT and Finance off one source of truth. Workday does not touch IT or device management.
- Far faster: buyers report about a month to implement versus roughly 8 for Workday, and ROI around 7 months versus 12.
- Better usability: G2 ease of use 9.4 versus Workday's 8.2, beating Workday on every G2 sub-score, with lower, modular TCO.

**Watch out for**

- Talent, performance, learning, skills and workforce planning trail Workday; there is no Skills Cloud equivalent and the Data Cloud is new (June 2026).
- A mid-market center of gravity with fewer Global 2000 references, EOR capped near 80 countries, and modular stacking plus peak-headcount billing that makes TCO hard to forecast.

**Pricing**

Modular PEPM on a required Unity base layer, no public list. Estimated effective stacked rate around $23 to $38 PEPM; Vendr median annual contract $45,360 across a wide range.

**What users say**

Rated 4.7 to 4.8 on G2 (around 13,000-plus reviews) and 4.9 on Capterra (4,886), the highest in this set. Private, valued at $16.8B in May 2025. Note the ongoing Deel litigation.

**Verdict:** the modern mid-market escape from Workday when fast setup, great UX and HR-plus-IT-plus-Finance unification matter more than deep enterprise talent and planning.

### HiBob (Bob)

HiBob (Bob) is a modern mid-market HRIS and people-experience platform that undercuts Workday on cost, speed and flexibility for fast-growing multinationals, while trailing on native global payroll, workforce management and enterprise planning.

**Where it beats Workday**

- Strong people experience and highly configurable workflows (engagement, surveys, culture features) in a modern, well-liked UI.
- Deploys in weeks to a few months at PEPM pricing, versus Workday's multi-quarter six- and seven-figure rollouts.
- Fast-moving AI (Bob AI agents, natural-language reporting, embedded Bersin Galileo intelligence).

**Watch out for**

- Payroll is the biggest gap: native only in the UK, embedded US via partners, and the rest via a sync-and-aggregate Payroll Hub. Thin workforce management.
- Reporting and dashboards are the top user complaint, and the practical scale ceiling is around 2,000 employees.

**Pricing**

Quote-based PEPM, a Core HR base plus paid add-ons. Third-party estimates put it around $16 to $25 PEPM, with annual revenue per customer near $29,000 to $50,000.

**What users say**

Rated 4.5 on G2 (2,711 reviews) and 4.6 on Capterra (179). Private; a September 2026 round led by Salesforce reportedly valued it near $3.2B.

**Verdict:** the employee-experience-led choice for multinational tech and scale-ups under about 2,000 people, as long as payroll runs through partners.

### Darwinbox

Darwinbox is an Asia-origin enterprise cloud HCM suite that challenges Workday and SAP on speed, cost and mobile, strongest in APAC, the Middle East and India. It is the most credible Workday challenger born in Asia and the only Asian-origin vendor in Gartner's Magic Quadrant.

**Where it beats Workday**

- Much faster and cheaper: buyers report about 2 months to implement versus 8 for Workday, at far lower absolute PEPM.
- A genuinely broad single suite plus current-generation agentic AI (12-plus agents, a Super Agent orchestrator, and an MCP server it calls a first for HCM).
- Mobile-first UX and strong native payroll and localization across India, APAC and MEA.

**Watch out for**

- Native payroll in only about 11 countries versus Workday's 50-plus, with lighter workforce planning and mid-tier analytics.
- Recurring slow-loading and lag complaints, especially on mobile, and a thinner North America and Europe footprint.

**Pricing**

Quote-based modular PEPM, estimated $8 to $10 PEPM, with a reported median contract near $160,000 a year and implementation from about $5,000 to $50,000.

**What users say**

Rated 4.4 on G2 (215 reviews) and 4.2 on Capterra (46). Private, with HQ moved to Singapore in 2025. A Gartner Magic Quadrant Challenger in 2024 and 2025.

**Verdict:** the enterprise challenger for globally distributed, mobile-first workforces with an APAC, MEA or India base, if you can accept thinner Western references.

**Group 4: SMB all-in-one**

### BambooHR

BambooHR is an SMB-focused, easy-to-use core HRIS with US payroll, hiring, performance and employee-experience tooling. It is the anti-Workday for companies that do not need an enterprise suite.

**Where it beats Workday**

- Simplicity and time-to-value: a clean, intuitive core HRIS that HR and employees genuinely like, fast and light to configure.
- Transparent, far lower pricing (published Core $10, Pro $17, Elite $25 PEPM) versus Workday's quote-only contracts.
- Strong employee experience and self-service adoption.

**Watch out for**

- Payroll is US-only native (global via one-way Xero sync and partners); no skills cloud, no enterprise LMS, no workforce planning, with compensation gated to the Elite tier.
- It scales poorly past the mid-market and has opaque add-on pricing for payroll, benefits and time.

**Pricing**

Published PEPM for 26-plus employees (Core $10, Pro $17, Elite $25) or flat for 25 or fewer. Payroll, benefits and time are quote-based add-ons; a 100-person company runs about $1,000 a month on Core before add-ons.

**What users say**

Rated 4.4 on G2 (around 8,293 reviews) and 4.6 on Capterra (around 3,454). Private, with a majority investment from Vista Equity Partners.

**Verdict:** the loved SMB default for companies of roughly 50 to 500 that want simple, published, fast core HR, not an enterprise suite.

### Zoho People

Zoho People is a low-cost SMB and global-south HRIS inside a huge app ecosystem. It is a credible Workday alternative only for small and mid-market employers, but at that size the price and ecosystem are hard to beat.

**Where it beats Workday**

- Price: paid tiers run about $1.50 to $5 per employee per month with a free plan up to 5 employees, and they are published while Workday's are not.
- An ecosystem moat: it bundles into People Plus and sits inside the 55-plus app Zoho One suite.
- Fast time-to-value (about a month) and strong India and Middle East localization.

**Watch out for**

- Narrow native global payroll (10 countries), essentially no workforce planning, no dedicated compensation module and thin skills intelligence.
- It is fragmented across bundled products rather than one data model, with a cluttered UI and weak large-enterprise references.

**Pricing**

Published per-employee tiers (Essential HR about $1.50, up to Enterprise about $5), free up to 5 employees, with the People Plus bundle quote-only above 500 users.

**What users say**

Rated 4.5 on G2 (431 reviews) and 4.4 on Capterra (374). Private and bootstrapped; parent Zoho serves 150M-plus users.

**Verdict:** the cheapest credible option for SMBs, especially in India and the global south, or anyone already living in the Zoho ecosystem.

### Paylocity

Paylocity is a US-focused payroll-first HCM platform for SMB and mid-market, strong on payroll and a social "Community" employee-experience layer, where Workday is a global enterprise suite.

**Where it beats Workday**

- Strong, well-rated native US multi-state payroll and tax (TrustRadius direct deposit 9.1, pay calculation 8.8).
- An employee-experience "Community" (social feed, recognition, surveys, modern mobile) that Workday does not emphasize.
- Faster implementation (about 3 to 6 months) and lower TCO for the mid-market.

**Watch out for**

- No native global payroll (international via a partner), so it is US-centric, with shallow enterprise talent and no skills engine.
- Support inconsistency at scale and cross-module reporting that can need spreadsheet merges.

**Pricing**

Quote-based PEPM, estimated around $22 to $33 for the full suite. A 200-employee buyer runs about $68,000 to $95,000 in year one including implementation.

**What users say**

Rated 4.4 on G2 (6,320 reviews) and 4.3 on Capterra (1,980). Public (NASDAQ: PCTY).

**Verdict:** the pick for a US company under about 5,000 that wants strong payroll and a modern employee experience, not a global suite.

### Employment Hero

Employment Hero is an all-in-one HR, payroll and benefits suite built for SMBs in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Southeast Asia. It is not an enterprise HCM like Workday, and does not try to be.

**Where it beats Workday**

- Decisively lower TCO and time-to-value: published per-employee pricing from about A$10 and setup in weeks.
- Genuine native award-interpreting payroll in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Singapore and Malaysia.
- A Swag employee super-app with benefits, earned-wage access and discounts that go beyond Workday self-service.

**Watch out for**

- No meaningful workforce planning, limited enterprise analytics, a shallow skills framework and learning that is largely a GO1 integration.
- US-market maturity is a gap (entered via the Humi acquisition in January 2025) and it is not built for enterprise scale.

**Pricing**

Modular, published per-user pricing in Australia (HR Standard A$10, Premium A$14, Payroll from A$8), with EOR quote-only.

**What users say**

Rated 4.4 on G2 and 4.4 on Capterra (239 reviews). Private, venture-backed, valued near $2B.

**Verdict:** the SMB all-in-one for Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Southeast Asia, with real local payroll and a strong employee app.

**Group 5: Specialists (one slice, alongside a system of record)**

### Cornerstone OnDemand

Cornerstone is a talent-management and learning specialist, strongest in learning (LMS and LXP), not a full HCM and not a core HRIS. It overlaps only the talent and learning slice of Workday and typically sits on top of a separate HRIS.

**Where it beats Workday**

- Learning depth: an LMS plus the EdCast LXP, a large content marketplace and extended-enterprise delivery, deeper and more specialized than Workday Learning.
- Acquisition-fed skills intelligence via the SkyHive-powered Skills Graph, competitive with Workday Skills Cloud.
- An AI-forward Galaxy platform of learner, admin and content agents, with MCP embedding into Microsoft Copilot and Salesforce Agentforce.

**Watch out for**

- Not a true HRIS: no native payroll, benefits, time or scheduling, so buyers pair it with ADP, UKG, Dayforce or Workday for core HR.
- Dated, clunky admin UX, implementation complexity that often needs consultants, and support latency.

**Pricing**

Quote-based, estimated $6 to $10 PEPM, usually bundled with separate content licensing. AWS Marketplace figures imply around $7 per user per month before content for the learning tier.

**What users say**

Rated 4.1 on G2 (530 reviews) and 4.3 on Capterra (232). Private, taken private by Clearlake Capital in a roughly $5.2B deal in 2021.

**Verdict:** a learning and talent specialist to run alongside your system of record, not a Workday replacement.

### Microsoft Dynamics 365 Human Resources

Microsoft Dynamics 365 HR is a core-HR module inside Microsoft's ERP suite, plus Microsoft Viva for engagement. It is not a full standalone HCM like Workday, and makes most sense for companies already deep in the Microsoft stack.

**Where it beats Workday**

- Native to the Microsoft stack: Dataverse, Power Platform, Teams, Power BI and Copilot, with strong extensibility.
- A lower base price and Teams-native self-service for buyers already on Dynamics ERP.
- It exploits Workday's SMB-overkill and high-TCO weaknesses when the buyer only needs core HR on top of Dynamics.

**Watch out for**

- No native payroll (partner-dependent), no native LMS (offloaded to Viva Learning, which is being trimmed, and Viva Goals was retired), and thin talent and performance.
- Still sold standalone but now running on the finance-and-operations infrastructure, with the older bundled HR module frozen.

**Pricing**

Per named user: a base app at $135 per user per month list, plus a $4 self-service add-on, with payroll and Viva licensed separately. Aggregators list a $120 starting price.

**What users say**

The public review base is extremely thin (single digits on Capterra and Software Advice), so treat ratings as noise. Public (NASDAQ: MSFT).

**Verdict:** a core-HR module for committed Microsoft Dynamics shops, best paired with a payroll partner, not a unified HCM swap.

### Justworks

Justworks is a US-focused PEO for small businesses that bundles payroll, benefits and compliance through co-employment. It overlaps only the payroll, benefits and compliance slice of Workday, not talent, learning or planning.

**Where it beats Workday**

- SMB fit, speed and price: self-serve setup, transparent per-employee pricing and no six-figure implementation.
- PEO co-employment that pools small firms into Fortune-500-grade health plans, workers comp and compliance cover they could not buy alone.
- Published, simple pricing versus Workday's quote-only high TCO.

**Watch out for**

- Absent across most of Workday's taxonomy: no real talent or performance suite, no skills engine, no deep ATS, no LMS, no compensation or workforce planning.
- Weak, add-on-gated reporting, thin integrations and PEO lock-in with benefits inflexibility.

**Pricing**

Published PEPM: PEO Basic about $59 per employee, Plus about $99 to $109, plus a standalone payroll product at $50 a month base plus $8 per employee.

**What users say**

Rated 4.6 on G2 (1,127 reviews) and 4.6 on Capterra (741). Private, with a prior valuation near $1.43B.

**Verdict:** a US PEO for small businesses that replaces the payroll and benefits slice, to sit beside (not instead of) a talent or performance tool.

### Sageo

![Sageo's competency framework generated from company values, the layer that runs on top of a system of record like Workday](https://sageo.ai/screenshots/framework-matrix-v2.png)

Sageo is a culture-first performance management specialist, not a Workday replacement. On 12 of the 14 Workday capability areas it simply does not play: no payroll, no core HRIS, no benefits, time, recruiting, learning, compensation or workforce planning. What it does is own the performance and development slice properly, and run on top of whatever system of record you keep, including Workday. Its one distinctive move is that it [generates the competency framework from your values](/features/ai-competency-frameworks), which most performance tools, Workday included, assume you already have.

**Where it beats Workday**

- It builds a level-by-level competency framework from your values and levels, rather than expecting you to bring one.
- Calibrated 360 reviews with an immutable audit trail, goals tied to plans, monthly 1:1s and AI development plans, in one focused workflow.
- Conservative, compliance-led AI: names and identifiers stripped before any model call, a human reviews every output, built for the EU AI Act and pay transparency. Setup takes about an hour, at about €6 per seat with every module included.

**Watch out for**

- It is not a system of record and deliberately lacks payroll, HRIS, benefits, time, recruiting, LMS, comp and workforce planning. Pair it with one of the suites above.
- It is early-stage, with minimal public review volume versus Workday's thousands of reviews and Global 2000 base.

**Pricing**

About €6 per seat per month in Europe ($7 elsewhere, priced by region), every module included, billed annually with a 10-seat minimum and a 14-day free trial. Orders of magnitude below Workday's PEPM.

**What users say**

Too early for a meaningful public review record, which we state plainly rather than pad. Operated by Sageo SIA, Rīga, Latvia.

**Verdict:** not a Workday alternative, but the performance and development layer to run on top of Workday or whatever replaces it. More in section 8.

## 7. When should you stay on Workday?

Plenty of companies should not leave. Workday earns its cost when the requirements are genuinely enterprise.

- You are a large, complex, multi-country employer (1,000-plus, often several thousand) that needs one system of record across HR, payroll, finance and planning.
- You need deep native global payroll across many countries and multi-entity, multi-currency operations.
- You rely on Workday's depth in skills (Skills Cloud), workforce planning (Adaptive Planning) and analytics (Prism), which most alternatives cannot match.
- You have the budget and the trained admins to run it, and the switching cost of ripping out a system of record outweighs the savings.
- If you are genuinely enterprise, do not downgrade to a mid-market tool to save money and lose capability. Instead, consider adding a focused layer (like Sageo for performance) on top, rather than replacing the core.

## 8. Where does Sageo fit?

Sageo is not a Workday replacement, and that is the honest version. It is a focused performance and development tool, and on most of Workday's suite it does not compete at all.

**A complement, not a rival:** Sageo is best framed as the performance and development layer that runs on top of a system of record, including Workday itself. If what actually frustrates you about Workday is the performance module (rigid cycles, no real competency framework, a review process people do not trust), you do not need to replace Workday to fix that. You can keep Workday as the system of record and run Sageo for the competency framework, calibrated 360s, 1:1s and development plans on top.

- A competency and levelling framework generated from your values, the thing Workday and every other performance tool assumes you already have.
- Calibrated, auditable reviews and AI development plans, with names stripped before any AI call and a human deciding every output.
- A flat, published price (about €6 per seat, all modules) and roughly an hour to set up, against Workday's quote-only PEPM and multi-month rollout.

> **Honest limits**
>
> If you need to replace Workday's payroll, HRIS, benefits, recruiting, learning or planning, buy one of the suites in this guide. Sageo does none of that, by design. Its job is to make the performance and development layer genuinely good, on top of whatever system of record you run.

**See it in Sageo** [The competency framework your reviews rest on](https://sageo.ai/features/ai-competency-frameworks): See how Sageo turns your values into a level-by-level framework, then runs calibrated reviews, 1:1s and development plans on top of your system of record.

## 9. How this comparison was researched

Compiled in October 2026 from vendor product and pricing documentation, G2, Capterra, TrustRadius and Gartner Peer Insights, and procurement aggregators. Ratings and review counts are as of that date and are platform-wide, not module-specific, so treat them as directional and weight small samples (Oracle, HiBob, Darwinbox and Microsoft on Capterra, several on TrustRadius) with care. All Workday-class pricing is estimated, because Workday, Oracle, SAP, UKG, Dayforce, ADP and Paylocity publish no list price; figures marked estimate are not list prices. Sageo is the publisher of this page and is a performance layer rather than a Workday replacement; its per-seat price is shown by region (about €6 in Europe, $7 elsewhere), so both figures refer to the same plan. All product names are trademarks of their owners, and this comparison is not endorsed by any of them.

## The verdict

- **Best true enterprise full-suite swap:** Oracle Cloud HCM or SAP SuccessFactors. the only real like-for-like replacements for a 1,000-plus global enterprise. Oracle on ERP adjacency and bundled AI agents, SAP on global payroll reach. Neither is dramatically cheaper or simpler.

- **Best for payroll and workforce management:** Dayforce, UKG Pro or ADP. deeper native payroll, time and scheduling than Workday at lower PEPM. Dayforce for continuous real-time pay, UKG for Kronos-grade scheduling, ADP for managed payroll and PEO.

- **Best when Workday is overkill:** Rippling, HiBob or Darwinbox. modern mid-market HCM, deployed in weeks not months, far lower TCO. Rippling adds IT and Finance, HiBob suits multinational tech, Darwinbox leads in APAC and MEA.

- **Best SMB all-in-one:** BambooHR, Zoho People, Paylocity or Employment Hero. published pricing and simple core HR for companies that never needed an enterprise suite. BambooHR (US), Zoho (cheapest), Paylocity (US payroll), Employment Hero (ANZ/UK/SEA).

- **Best for replacing one slice of Workday:** Cornerstone, Justworks or Microsoft D365 HR. specialists that sit alongside a system of record: Cornerstone for learning and talent, Justworks for US payroll and benefits via a PEO, Microsoft for core HR on Dynamics.

- **Best performance layer to keep on top of your HRIS:** Sageo. not a Workday replacement, but the culture-first performance and development layer that runs on top of any system of record including Workday, generating a competency framework from your values. About EUR 6 per seat, all modules.

**Bottom line.** There is no single Workday alternative, so sort by buyer, not by rank. For a true enterprise full-suite swap, Oracle Cloud HCM or SAP SuccessFactors. For payroll and workforce management, Dayforce, UKG or ADP. When Workday is overkill, the modern mid-market tools Rippling, HiBob or Darwinbox. For SMBs, BambooHR, Zoho, Paylocity or Employment Hero. And several names (Cornerstone, Justworks, Microsoft, Sageo) are not full-suite alternatives at all: they replace one slice and sit alongside a system of record. Sageo is the performance and development layer that runs on top of Workday itself.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best alternative to Workday?

It depends on why you are leaving. For a true enterprise full-suite replacement, Oracle Cloud HCM or SAP SuccessFactors. For payroll and workforce management, Dayforce, UKG Pro or ADP. When Workday is overkill for your size, the modern mid-market tools Rippling, HiBob or Darwinbox. For an SMB, BambooHR, Zoho People, Paylocity or Employment Hero. And if you only want to replace one slice, Cornerstone (learning and talent), Justworks (US payroll and benefits) or Sageo (performance and development, on top of your system of record).

### Why do companies leave Workday?

The common reasons are cost and total cost of ownership (roughly $35 to $45 PEPM for HCM alone, $100-plus with payroll and finance, plus implementation that often runs 100 to 150 percent of the first-year subscription), long implementations (6 to 18 months with a required integrator), admin complexity, being overkill below roughly 500 to 1,000 employees, and reporting rigidity. Workday remains an excellent enterprise suite, so these are usually fit and cost issues, not quality issues.

### What is a cheaper alternative to Workday?

For mid-market companies, Rippling, HiBob and Darwinbox deliver far lower total cost of ownership with faster setup. For SMBs, BambooHR (published Core $10, Pro $17, Elite $25 PEPM), Zoho People (about $1.50 to $5 per employee) and Employment Hero (from about A$10) publish real prices. If you only need the performance and development slice, Sageo runs about EUR 6 per seat, every module included, on top of whatever system of record you keep.

### Is there a true full-suite alternative to Workday?

Only two. Oracle Cloud HCM and SAP SuccessFactors match Workday across the full HCM suite for large, global employers. Dayforce and UKG Pro are strong counter-picks for payroll and workforce management but are lighter on talent, skills and planning. Everything else in the mid-market and SMB tiers wins on price, speed and simplicity rather than matching Workday's capability.

### Is Sageo a Workday alternative?

Not as a replacement. Sageo is not a system of record and deliberately lacks payroll, HRIS, benefits, time, recruiting, learning, compensation and workforce planning. It is a culture-first performance and development platform that runs on top of a system of record, including Workday itself. If what frustrates you about Workday is the performance module, you can keep Workday and run Sageo for the competency framework, calibrated 360s, 1:1s and development plans, for about EUR 6 per seat.
